Deeds, Wagner claim nods for Governor, Lt. Governor

Cranwell Congratulates Democratic Nominee Creigh Deeds

DPVA Chair: 'The ideal candidate to continue the Warner-Kaine tradition'

RICHMOND - Democratic Party of Virginia Chairman C. Richard Cranwell released the following statement Tuesday regarding the election of Creigh Deeds as the Democratic nominee for governor in 2009.

"I am proud to congratulate my longtime friend, Creigh Deeds, on his nomination to be the next Democratic candidate for governor.  Over two decades, I have known Creigh to be a man of deep integrity, committed to serving Virginia and standing up for middle-class families.

"Creigh Deeds is the ideal candidate to continue the Warner-Kaine tradition of moderate, commonsense leadership for Virginia. As a candidate, Creigh will appeal to Democrats, Republicans and Independents in every corner of the commonwealth. Creigh's focus on turning around the economy by investing in education is the right plan to keep Virginia moving forward.

"Creigh's decisive victory comes after a lively primary with three highly qualified candidates for governor. Terry McAuliffe and Brian Moran ran top-notch campaigns and raised important issues that made our nominee stronger. Just like President Obama did last year, Creigh Deeds emerges from this primary battle-tested and ready  for the race in November.

"Virginians will have a clear choice in November between a moderate Democrat who stands with Virginia families and a divisive Republican who has consistently blocked progress for Virginia. Bob McDonnell has spent a career saying 'no' to the progress that we've made under Governor Kaine and Governor Warner. The contrast between Bob and Creigh could not be clearer: Creigh has spent nearly two decades breaking down party and geographic barriers to make lives better for Virginia families.

"I congratulate Creigh on his decisive victory and look forward to working with him to keep Virginia moving forward."

Cranwell Congratulates Democratic LG Nominee Jody Wagner

DPVA Chair: Wagner 'played an integral role in getting Virginia back on track'

RICHMOND - Democratic Party of Virginia Chairman C. Richard Cranwell released the following statement Tuesday regarding the election of Jody Wagner as the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor in 2009.

"On behalf of Democrats across the Commonwealth, I'm thrilled to have Jody Wagner as our nominee for Lt. Governor.  In addition to her seven-year record of success in the Warner and Kaine administrations, Jody also brings a background as a small business owner, and the experience of raising a family of four. During her time as state Treasurer and Secretary of Finance, she played an integral role in getting Virginia back on track following the Gilmore years, and along with Governor Kaine, succeeded in moving the Commonwealth forward. Her fiscal stewardship played a large role in Virginia being named the 'best managed state,' the 'best state for business,' and the 'best state to raise a child.'

"Virginians will have a very clear choice for lieutenant governor: Jody's record of bringing people together across party lines, to build consensus and find common sense solutions, or Bill Bolling's two decades as a bitter partisan, more interested in scoring political points than in finding real solutions to the problems that face the Commonwealth.  I know Jody is committed to the next generation, not the next election, and I'm confident that her record of success and her vision for Virginia's future will convince voters that she is best prepared to become the Commonwealth's next Lt. Governor.

"I applaud Mike Signer on running a vigorous campaign and look forward to working with him to elect the Democratic ticket in November."
